Distinguished Faculty 2014

     David Beach

Labette Community College announced Tuesday, May 6, 2014 that David Beach, Mathematics and Physics Instructor, was named the 2014 Distinguished Faculty Award Recipient. The Distinguished Faculty Award is presented annually. Faculty members must be nominated by students or LCC employees to be considered by the selection committee. Criteria for the award include teaching effectiveness, college service, student involvement, and community service. All full-time faculty who have completed at least four years of full-time teaching at LCC are eligible to be nominated.

Beach was honored at a reception in the Cardinal Café on Tuesday afternoon. This award ceremony is to pay tribute to one instructor’s contribution to the central mission of the college- to provide quality learning opportunities to students of LCC. This award was developed to allow the college to publicly recognize and reward an instructor who has performed in an exemplary manner.

Beach has implemented less expensive textbooks for coursework, and found 3-dimensional graphing software for Calculus students. In Physics courses, Beach has added more lab equipment using the LabPro computer. In his Physics courses, Beach has added two additional chapters to the first course and additional material to the second course while still having good results on exams and assignments from the students in the courses.
Outside of classroom time, Beach can be found cheering on his students at an athletic event, supporting the LCC Auction for Scholarships, advising students, or meeting with students outside of normal office hours to ensure success in the classroom. He serves on several college committees, Faculty Senate, and participates on LCC’s Company Olympics team. When Beach is not in the classroom, he enjoys being a part of a hot air balloon club, serving on the Parsons Historical Society and Iron Horse Museum Board and currently serves as vice-President for the Labette County Historical Society as well as serving on the Parsons Arts and Humanities Board.

Many anonymous student comments from the Distinguished Faculty Award Nominations were read at the reception. These student comments included:

“David beach deserves the award for many reasons. He helps students reach their true educational potential. He encourages and pushes students to reach new academic goals. His teachings will play a large role in my future success in college,” said one student.

Another student added, “Mr. Beach is a fantastic teacher who goes through the daily work and explains everything in great detail. He is always trying to find a way to put math into real life situations for us to better understand it.”

“Mr. Beach is not just an instructor of a course, he is a teacher,” said one student. “My only regret is that I did not have my previous math classes with Mr. Beach, maybe if I had him for an instructor before now, I would have not struggled so much in Calculus.”
