LCC Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Action Project Selected

August 16, 2023

LCC Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Tau Theta Chapter Honors in Action Project for 2022 has been selected for publication.  The Honor Society’s “Play in the Elementary School Classroom” was chosen from among 396 entries to be included as one of 18 articles in the 2023 edition of Civic Scholar: Phi Theta Kappa Journal of Undergraduate Research. The Journal is being printed and will be ready in hard copy this Fall.

LCC’s PTK research and findings centered around, “What impact does play have on mental health in a school setting?”  The Chapter members received a grant of $1,000 to create activity boxes for fourteen local elementary schools in the Labette and Cherokee counties. PTK supplemented the grant with their own fundraising dollars to ensure all schools requesting boxes would receive one.

Over 170 boxes were created and delivered in November during the Fall 2022 school year.  Each package included over two dozen fidget toys, a Connect Four game and multiple breathing exercise cards.  Over 2,500 students were impacted by the mental health activity boxes.

“Our PTK students worked hard on the Honors in Action Project,” stated Tammy Fuentez, LCC Vice President of Student Affairs, PTK Advisor and Heartland PTK Regional Coordinator.  “They are very deserving of this publication, and I am so proud of all their accomplishments.”

PTK
Brookland Tinker from Walnut, Kansas and Haley Farran from Girard, Kansas, members of the Tau Theta, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Chapter at Labette Community College, packaged action items for the Activity Boxes for local elementary schools. The Civic Scholar: Phi Theta Kappa Journal of Undergraduate Research selected LCC’s PTK Honors in Action Project to be published in the 2023 Fall edition.
