Parsons, KAN. (November 5, 2024) – Parsons P.E.O. Chapter JE, a philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing the education of women, awarded three Labette Community College students with scholarships in a special ceremony held October 29 at the K-State Research and Extension Center.
This year marked the introduction of Chapter JE’s inaugural legacy scholarships, named in memory of three cherished members whose impact on the community continues to inspire. Each scholarship is a tribute to these women, honoring their dedication, compassion, and spirit through the achievements of local women who share their values.
“Our scholarship committee was moved by the determination and dedication of these recipients. They are not only outstanding students but are also driven by the values and purpose our chapter strives to uphold,” said Daneen Landis-Coover, P.E.O. scholarship committee chair. “These women are carrying forward a legacy that is both inspiring and impactful, and we are proud to support them as they pursue their dreams.”
The first recipient, Cyprus Jones, was awarded the Linda Godbey Scholarship. Pursuing a career in social work, Cyprus represents Linda’s commitment to service and community, a legacy of compassion that Linda fostered throughout her life.
Katrina Balke received the Sharon Ryan Scholarship. Known for her resilience and commitment to personal growth, Katrina reflects the strength and devotion Sharon embodied as a mother and community member.
The Carole Veenis Scholarship was presented to Danielle Kelley, a nursing student whose dedication to care exemplifies the warmth and empathy Carole shared with everyone she met.
“I am incredibly grateful and honored to be lifted up by an organization of such phenomenal women,” said Balke. “I hope to make all sisters of PEO, past and present, proud with my contributions to our community.”
P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization of women dedicated to empowering other women through education with scholarships, grants, and awards. Their goal is to support and motivate women in reaching their highest aspirations.
Chapter President Connie Goodnight shared her thoughts on the legacy of these scholarships, saying, “Our chapter continually works toward building sisterhood, friendships, and supporting women through educational assistance programs like these scholarships. Education is at the heart of the P.E.O. Sisterhood’s mission, and Chapter JE is honored to support these three deserving women as they shine brightly as leaders of tomorrow.”
The scholarship committee of Chapter JE reviewed applications submitted through the Labette Community College Foundation. Chapter members voted to award the scholarships to non-traditional female students attending Labette Community College, supporting the educational journey of women who demonstrate commitment, resilience, and a passion for making a difference.
To support the annual scholarships, Chapter JE P.E.O. Sisterhood raises funds by selling holiday evergreen wreaths and swags. More information about the chapter and its efforts to advance women's education is available on the Facebook page, P.E.O. Chapter JE Parsons, KS.
