Labette Community College (LCC) will host its 3rd Annual Founders Day Celebration on Thursday, September 11, from 12:00–1:30 p.m. in the Cardinal Event Center. The annual tradition commemorates the first day of classes held at LCC on September 12, 1923 and honors the College’s history, traditions, and the people who have shaped its legacy.

Rees Hughes, long credited as the “Founder” of LCC, was instrumental in establishing the College more than a century ago. His leadership and vision created lasting educational opportunities for Southeast Kansas, laying the foundation for the institution’s continued growth and impact today. This year’s event will also celebrate the 100th Birthday of Kenny Ervin, LCC’s oldest known living graduate. Ervin, a 1948 graduate, has been a steadfast supporter of LCC for decades. He has served on college committees, was named the 1986 Cardinal Citation Award recipient, and is a familiar face at Cardinal Basketball games and the LCC Auction for Scholarships.

Guests arriving at the event will be welcomed through a spirited Cardinal Tunnel by the LCC Spirit Squad. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. with opening remarks from Lindi Forbes, Executive Director of the LCC Foundation & Alumni Association, followed by LCC President Dr. Mark Watkins. As part of the program, the Men’s and Women’s Cardinal Basketball Teams and the Spirit Squad will join Ervin at the front of the event center. The teams will present him with special gifts from the College and a birthday cake before leading the crowd in singing Happy Birthday.

“Founders Day is always a wonderful opportunity to honor our history,” said President Watkins. “This year, we have the privilege of celebrating both LCC’s history and the 100th birthday of one of our most beloved alumni. Kenny’s life is a shining example of the lifelong connection between our graduates and this institution.”

The celebration will conclude with a special drawing for two $300 Founders Day scholarships, sponsored each year by the LCC Foundation & Alumni Association. One scholarship will be awarded from in-person registrations at the event, with Ervin himself drawing the winning name. The second scholarship will be awarded from all online registrations. The dual drawing ensures that all students have the opportunity to participate, whether or not they can attend in person.

The celebration is free and open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community guests.
