Parsons, KS- The Labette Community College Public Relations class is hosting a 5K walk/run on Friday, April 15 at Forest Park in Parsons, Kansas. “Miles for Meals 5K Glow Run” is designed to raise money and collect non-perishable foods and other household items for the LCC Pantry. The pantry allows college students to receive a limited amount of food and household necessities each week.

Early registration is underway now through April 1st. For a $20 entry fee participants receive a “Miles for Meals 5K Glow Run” t-shirt, snacks, water and medals for the top ten finishers. Remaining funds will benefit the LCC Pantry. Late registrations are allowed through the start of the event, but do not include a t-shirt.

On the evening of the event, participants will check-in between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. beside the stage in Forest Park to pick up t-shirts and bib numbers. Participants who bring non-perishable foods or other household items will be given glow sticks and accessories to wear during the event. At 8 p.m. participants will get set for the 5K to begin and complete the run around the perimeter of the park. Area bands will be entertaining runners and guests throughout the evening.

To warm up prior to the run, from 7:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., Zumba will be offered under the direction of local instructor Lisah Cervantes. Also prior to the run, public relations students will present a brief explanation about “food insecurity” and how the LCC Pantry is working to help combat the issue. According to the College and University Food Bank Alliance, “Food insecurity has increasingly become an issue on college and university campuses and can pose a significant barrier to student success.”

Tammy Fuentez, LCC Vice-President of Student Affairs stated, “We have had many students express how the campus pantry is helping them eat regularly each week due to limited funds – this includes non-traditional students with families as well as student athletes and other traditional aged students.”
