September 27, 2023 |
Patty McGee, author and educator, has been chosen as the speaker for the 38th Annual Jack & Ruth Gribben English Lecture Series at Labette Community College (LCC). The Gribben English Lecture Series provides a forum for middle and high school teachers, community college instructors, and university professors who want to improve the quality of their instruction in composition. This free professional development opportunity will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, at 9 a.m., with lunch included. To register, contact Gaye Evans at 620-820-1281.
McGee’s topic will be “Feedback that Moves the Writers Forward: How to Escape Correcting Mode and Transform Student Writing.” McGee’s presentation will be set up in a workshop style to help educators envision what feedback can look like in the absence of correction.
McGee is an author-educator whose passion and vision is to create learning environments where teachers and students discover their true potential and power. McGee’s favorite moments are when groups of teachers are working with students collaboratively in the classroom. She has served schools nationally and internationally to support literacy teaching and learning. Among a variety of publications, she is the author of Feedback that Moves Writers Forward: How to Escape Correcting Mode to Transform Student Writing (Corwin 2017) and Writers Workshop Made Simple: 7 Essentials for Every Classroom and Every Writer (Benchmark 2020). Each year the LCC English faculty arrange a speaker and help host the lecture series in conjunction with the LCC Foundation. This is the longest running free professional development activity for composition educators in Kansas. Approximately 40 English instructors from area schools, community colleges and universities attend. The series is funded by an endowment gift from the late Jack and Ruth Gribben who were outstanding supporters of arts, literature, and community affairs.
