Bolanders & Dr. Watkins

John and Linda Bolander, residents of Parsons, Kansas, have joined the Labette Community College (LCC) Foundation’s “Cardinal Legacy Society”. The couple intends to leave a portion of their estate to the LCC Foundation while establishing the Leota L. Bolander, RN, and John W. Bolander, RN Endowed Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship is being set up to honor John’s mother, who graduated from the first-ever LCC nursing class in 1970, and John himself, who graduated from the LCC nursing program in 1979. LCC President Dr. Mark Watkins, was present to receive their initial gift.

Labette Community College (LCC) Foundation is pleased to announce that John & Linda Bolander of Parsons, Kansas, are the newest “Cardinal Legacy Society members.” The purpose of the society is to recognize and honor individuals who have informed the foundation of their intention to support LCC through a bequest or other planned gift. The Bolanders have planned to leave a portion of their estate to the LCC Foundation.

They went a step further by giving a $5,000 gift to establish the Leota L. Bolander, RN and John W. Bolander, RN Endowed Nursing Scholarship to honor John’s mother, who graduated from the very first LCC nursing class in 1970 and John, who graduated from the LCC nursing program in 1979.

“We are grateful for John and Linda’s foresight to establish this scholarship while they are still living,” said Lindi Forbes, Executive Director of the LCC Foundation and Alumni Association. “Now, they will enjoy thank you letters from students who receive the scholarship yearly. Then, the scholarship will get additional funding when they pass on. It’s the best of both worlds to create the legacy while they are still here and to know it will last in perpetuity when they are gone.”

LCC President Dr. Mark Watkins was on hand to receive their initial gift. “I am thankful for John and Linda’s dedication to help generations of nursing students pay for college,” Watkins said. “Providing scholarships can help remove the financial barrier to higher education for nurses and encourage them to pursue this high-demand career.”

“Planned giving does not require a large income or vast estate, but only a thoughtful intention to make a difference in student lives,” said Forbes. “A list of all members of the Cardinal Legacy Society can be seen on the Foundation website at labette.edu/foundation/legacy.”
