The Labette Community College Gallery Committee has chosen student, Samantha Gilstrap, as the winner for the John and Bonnie Latzer Student Art Award for the Spring 2016 semester. The Latzer Art Award was established to recognize student achievement in the Fine Arts at Labette Community College. The winning artwork is a ceramic sculpture called “Lion Head” by Gilstrap.

Gilstrap, of Joplin, Missouri, was awarded a $400 scholarship to be used the following semester. The award may be applied to her tuition, fees and/or books. Gilstrap created the piece in John Ford’s Ceramics II class.

“I really enjoyed Mr. Ford’s ceramics class this semester. I made the lion head piece because I think lions are beautiful creatures,” said Gilstrap. She is a liberal studies major and plans to transfer to a university after LCC.

Gilstrap’s piece of art will be permanently on display at Labette Community College.
