Parsons, KS- Student Support Services (SSS), of Labette Community College (LCC), announces the October Student of the Month, Melinda Davis, of Parsons, KS. Davis is a sophomore, originally from Wichita Falls, TX, who hopes to gain admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant program next year.
Davis has excelled academically in her time at LCC, gaining membership in Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the two-year college, and being included on the Dean’s or President’s lists every semester.
Melinda expressed gratitude to her friends and family during her educational career, saying, “They are very supportive, and they all encourage me to keep on going. Without their support and prayers I would never get through the tough times.” Davis also singled out several of her instructors at LCC for their assistance in her success as a student. “Intermediate algebra and college algebra are the hardest classes I have taken.” She describes a team effort in her success, “Nancy Steinert taught me to love math, and Ralph Gouvion and Alan Pommier taught me to like algebra and not to be afraid of it.” She continued, noting the help of staff and tutors in the Student Success Center, “Sam Jack, Academic Coordinator, and Jose Martinez, peer tutor, spent hours helping me with algebra.”
Davis has been an active participant in SSS for several semesters, and spoke highly of the staff, “Everyone is so friendly, and go out of their way to help me and countless students. They provide free tutors, calculators, books, and wonderful support to me each semester. I am so grateful. They all really care how you are doing.”
Student Support Services is a TRIO Program funded by the United States Department of Education to improve the persistence, transfer, and graduation rates of first-generation and income-eligible college students at LCC. Student Support Services serves 200 students each year with an annual budget of $288,400.
