September 18, 2018 |
Student Support Services (SSS) of Labette Community College (LCC) announces the September SSS Scholar, Sarah Rightmer of Erie, KS. Rightmer is a sophomore English major who anticipates graduating in May 2019.
Rightmer is currently serving as the Vice President of Public Relations for LCC’s Tau Theta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year college students. Rightmer works as a Mental Health and Developmental Disability Technician at Parsons State Hospital and Training Center. She credits friends and family as factors in her success: “My inspirations in my life are my mother, Jacki, my best friends Kelsey and Kayla, my boyfriend, Steve, and my family within the Tau Theta chapter of PTK.”
Other relationships essential to her success as a student have been the Phi Theta Kappa chapter advisor, Tammy Fuentez and her faculty advisor and English professor, Elizabeth Stoneberger.
Rightmer acknowledges her SSS participation, saying, “SSS has helped make me a successful student by providing textbooks through the Debbie Groff Memorial Book Fund, providing proofreading assistance for essays I have written, and words of encouragement when I come in for my check-ins and enrollment.”
“My time at LCC has completely changed my life,” Rightmer continued. “When I first became a student, my life had a lack of direction, purpose, and positivity. Now, I am more certain of the educational path I want to take, the career path I want to be on, I feel important and challenged, and I am surrounded by students and an outside support system that is uplifting, positive, reassuring, and encouraging.”
Student Support Services is a TRIO Program funded by the United States Department of Education to improve the persistence, transfer, and graduation rates of first-generation and income-eligible college students at LCC. Student Support Services serves 200 students each year with an annual budget of $308,173. For more information, go to http://www.labette.edu/sss.
