Student Support Services (SSS) of Labette Community College (LCC) announces the September SSS Scholar, Larry Deweese of Parsons, KS. Deweese is an Engineering major, with plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on aerospace.
Larry is currently serving as President of the LCC Student Veterans Organization (SVO) and a member of SALUTE honor society. He is a US Army Veteran, having served on active duty for 7 years and 8 months. During his service he was deployed to Haiti for humanitarian aid in support of Operation Unified Response and then to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He currently works full time at CST Storage while also pursuing his degree as a full time student at LCC and working as the VA work study student, where he assists military-connected students with military, VA, and educational needs.
He credits his family as his inspiration to return to school to further his education. Another relationship instrumental to his success as a student has been student veteran advisor Sara Comer: “she has helped me to stay on top of my goals and has had the answer to every question that I've asked so far.”
Deweese acknowledges his SSS participation, saying, “Student Support Services has helped to ensure that I succeed by helping apply for and qualify for scholarships, provided a place to take proctored exams, and provided a quiet place to finish homework.”
Deweese adds, “my time here has been very challenging but has been even more rewarding.”
Student Support Services is a TRIO Program funded by the United States Department of Education to improve the persistence, transfer, and graduation rates of first-generation and income-eligible college students at LCC. Student Support Services serves 200 students each year with an annual budget of $308,173.
