Parsons, KS – The Labette Community College (LCC) Foundation is happy to announce that the LCC Hendershot Gallery Committee has selected a winner for the John and Bonnie Latzer Student Award for the Spring 2023 semester. The winning artwork is entitled “Wire Boot” by Leticia Lima Franco from Recife, Brazil. Franco was a student in the 3-Dimensional Design course at LCC taught by Heidi Schaaf, Assistant Professor of Art.

The Latzer Art Award was established to recognize student achievement in the Fine Arts at LCC through the Foundation. Franco will receive a $500 scholarship to be used the following semester for tuition, fees, and/or books.

“The Hendershot Gallery Student Art Exhibition is a selection of outstanding work from students in the Fine Arts and Graphic Design Technology departments,” stated Schaaf. “Leticia’s 3-Dimensional artwork displays her skill and artistic abilities, making her art a great choice for the Latzer Award.”

Franco created her 3-Dimensional project by sketching her boot from her wardrobe that had a lot of interesting details. She then made a blueprint of the shoe and enlarged the print using math. She then started to build with wire of various thicknesses. She compared her design to the enlarged blueprint and the actual shoe to keep the proportions correct. Franco’s winning artwork will be permanently on display at LCC.

The Gallery Committee presented certificates of recognition to the "Best in Category" for the following:
Best in 3-Dimensional Design- Wire Frame Shoe -Israel Fox

Best in Illustration – Low Poly – Erica L. Schlegel
